Printable Recipes Are Here!

It’s been months in the making but finally, FINALLY, I have written recipes available for download! I made (with my brother’s help) a little store over on the Milkslinger website. It’s super basic, but for now it’s a start. Consider this a soft launch.

Q&A

So, Jennifer. Why the printed recipes?
Videos are fabulous for teaching a particular method and getting a feel for a process, but following a recipe from a video is a pain in the butt. (Says me.) I am forever scrubbing through videos, my own included, and jotting down notes on the back of a piece of scrap paper to use while I cook. 

But then the paper ends up in the trash, or I can’t read my handwriting beyond the same day I scribbled it, and I end up repeating the whole cycle all over again, and again. And again.

Maybe you do the same thing?

So I decided to offer the printable recipes.

Why do I need to buy the recipe? Can’t I just get the recipe from your video?
Absolutely (see above)! These printable recipes are for those of you who don’t want to bother with jotting down notes, or like to keep a written record of what you make, or want to be more systematic.

This still doesn’t solve the problem of WHERE to put those printed recipes. It’s so easy to lose things in working kitchens!
Okay, right. So here’s what I did. I got a thin 3-ring binder and a bunch of transparent sleeves from Amazon. The recipes go in the sleeves and the sleeves go in the binder. Now when it’s time to make a cheese, I simply lift the sleeve out of the binder and magnet it to my knife stripe and voila! No scribbling on scrap paper! 

Bonus: you can scribble permanent cooking notes on the paper itself, or use a dry erase marker to write one-time calculations directly on the plastic sleeve.

How did you settle on $2.95 a recipe? 
It sounded reasonable — accessible to most people while at the same time (eventually) covering my labor. Note: While the prices will never drop, they may go up eventually.

Do I always have to go to the store to get the recipes?
Yes, but I will be linking the recipe in the description box below its corresponding video so that you can watch a video, think, I wanna make that, and then click the link to that recipe, eliminating the need to search and think.

Is there anything else special about the printed recipes? 
Oh my gosh, YES. I’m so glad you asked! These recipes:

  • include both imperial and metric measurements, whoop-whoop!!!
  • are minimalistic — just the necessary steps and numbers — so you don’t get bogged down with verbiage.
  • are living docs. The recipes will be continually edited to reflect changes and improvements.
  • can be downloaded as many times as you want! For life!
  • are meant to be shared. Don’t repost them online but do share them with all your fellow, in-real-life cheesemakers. I’m all about spreading the cheesemaking love!

What if I find a mistake?
Tell me! Multiple people have laid eyes on these recipes but that doesn’t mean we didn’t miss something. If you notice one of the metric conversions isn’t accurate, or would appreciate more clarification for a particular step, please let me know. I want these recipes to be straight-forward, uncluttered, and as efficient as possible.

Help! I just checked out the store and didn’t see the recipe I was looking for. 
Over the next few weeks, more and more recipes will be showing up in the store. Keep checking back, or shoot me an email with a recipe request and I’ll try to scootch your request to the top of the list. 

Are you planning to do a book? 
No. I might create bundles geared towards beginner cheesemakers or a certain type of cheesemaking (like blues or fresh cheeses or washed rinds), but that won’t be for a loooong time. I’m doing almost all this work myself and this sort of recipe writing, not to mention the techy side of things, is a slow burn.

Jennifer, be honest. Are these printables actually worth it?  
Listen. I’m the sort of person who hates to spend money if I can get something for free, but the convenience of these recipes [pauses to swoon theatrically] makes me practically giddy with joy. It wasn’t easy to get here, sure — I’ve spent HOURS poring over measurements, notes, and video, and that’s after I hired a sweet woman through Fiverr to get the recipes from video to paper — but now that I’ve got the recipes in my hand, it’s sooo worth it.
